Abstracted Botanicals: 4-Day Workshop with Roberta Ahrens

This unique 4-day workshop with cracked linen canvas and abstracted botanicals is a journey into your unique expression on intriguing surface material. Roberta Ahrens, from the Bay Area, has developed a proprietary blend of plaster-embedded canvas she calls cracked linen. A development after many years as a classically trained painter in the Decorative Arts. Her love of horticulture brought her to focus on botanical subjects, diving into what she calls the architecture of nature. The results are truly breathtaking. By mixing traditional finishing techniques and breaking some rules, she manipulates and etches into the plaster creating a new contemporary style adding depth and presence to her pieces that sets her work apart.

Roberta Ahrens is one of Northern California's Master Decorative Painters & Fine Artists. With over 30 years of experience in the application of classic and contemporary paint finishes throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Classically trained in the Decorative Arts at the Joann Day Studio in the 80s, her extensive experience in painting large-scale murals combined with the practical knowledge of artistic applications acquired over a long career led her to develop a unique style of Fine Art painting in 2005.
Take a look at her work here.

In the inter-war era when Asian Americans faced overwhelming prejudice, particularly in California, the new language of glamour and sports changed the way they presented themselves in San Luis Obispo: as stars and champions. Some of this imagery even blossomed into national fame; pictured is Helen Louis, Ah Louis’s youngest daughter, as the September 1924 cover girl for McCall’s magazine, read by 8% of America’s population.
